About the Artist – Angelina Quic Ixtamer
Angelina Quic Ixtamer was born in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala. As the first woman in her village to paint with oils, she faced severe criticism as artistic painting was regarded as exclusive to men. She ignored her detractors and persevered, eventually creating her signature style, ‘vista de pájaro’, or, ‘bird’s eye view.’ Her artwork depicts scenes of the everyday life of the Mayan people and takes inspiration from the lives of her predecessors. In her studio, Quic Ixtamer works to inspire young people to carry on the tradition of Mayan artistic painting.
