Haunted Eyes features one of National Geographic’s most iconic portraits, Afghan Girl photographed by photojournalist Steve McCurry in 1984. The adolescent girl with green eyes and a red headscarf was identified in 2002 as Sharbat Gula. At the time the portrait was taken, she was a child living in a refugee camp in Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.
