Summer of 1867: aged 27, Claude Monet was living in poverty. His paintings had been refused by the Jury of the Salon that same year. He saw no other way than to spend the summer at his aunt’s near the Havre, while his future wife Camille stayed in Paris, pregnant. He worked relentlessly, completing large-format paintings including his famous “Terrasse in Sainte-Adresse”.
